DEACON CANDIDATES
JASON HORJUS
Married to Julie-Ann Horjus
Children: Judah (6 years) and Joshua (1 year)
Like many other Christians, I too, grew up in a Christian home. I accepted Christ into my life at an early age. It wasn't until after I graduated High School and moved in to my grandparent's home that my faith grew tremendously. Having survived a brain tumor and finding out it was cancerous, I realized my life is not my own, and that I should use my life to serve Him. This led me to serving the LORD in China as a missionary along with my wife. With a missionary background, one of the ways I've seen God moving in Wellspring Church is having a greater impact on missions and reaching unreached people groups around the world.
My wife and I continue to serve God here as Ambassadors and Sunday School teachers. And I look forward to expanding my service to the LORD as a member of the deacon team. Thank you and God Bless!!!
NICK REED
Married to Rachel Reed
Children: Sophia (2.5 years) and Margot (1 year)
Our family has been attending Wellspring since 2020. We have been blessed by Sunday worship, God-inspired teaching, and Life Groups. All of these things have helped Wellspring feel like home. I grew up in Jenison and attended Calvin Christian High School which helped shape my faith along with church activities and Christian parents. Through my upbringing and now adult life, God has continually been molding and shaping me as I strive to live a life honoring to Him. I have recognized God's presence throughout my life and I know He is working all things, regardless of the circumstance, for my good. I currently work at Allendale Christian School as the Director of Community Engagement and have had previous experience in teaching physical education, sales, and supply chain management. I look forward to serving my Wellspring family in this role and trust that God will work through me.
JOHN WOLTERS
Married to Tammy Wolters
Children: Noah, Matthew, Emily, DeVaughn
Tammy and I, along with our sons, DeVaughn and Matthew began attending Wellspring in 2020 and became members in 2021. We love the community, unity and Biblical truth integrated throughout Wellspring Church.
I was truly blessed to grow up in a strong Christian home in New Jersey, but I strayed from the Lord during my high school and college years. Through the power of prayer, (especially my mom’s) God saved me. I met my wife Tammy after I graduated from Calvin College. Through Christ's amazing grace, mercy, and faithfulness, my entire life since meeting my wife is a testimony of God’s faithfulness in that He will never fail us nor give up on us.
I work at LIFE International as the Director of Finance, serve as President of our non-profit ministry, Christian Education in Liberia and serve on the board of Freedom in Faith ministry. I feel both privileged and excited to serve Wellspring in whatever way the Lord calls.
BOB BUIKEMA (RENEWING)
Married to Barb Buikema
Children: 4 grown children and 7 grandchildren that are all out of state.
Both Barb and I were born and raised at Calvary Church in Grand Rapids. It was there in the Primary Department of Sunday School that my teacher, Mrs. Doot, talked to me about Jesus and Salvation. She then prayed and led me to the Lord as my personal Savior.
Though I didn't live my entire life as Christ would have wanted me to, I always knew the Holy Spirit was there. After I served in the Army, I recommitted my life to Christ to take full control.
I retired in 1996 from the Kent County Sheriff Department after 25 years of service. I now work part time at McDonalds and enjoy serving Wellspring families when they come in. In my spare time, both Barb and I enjoy serving together for the last 8 summers hosting at Dunes Harbor Family Camp. We also enjoy gardening and grow 800 varieties of daylilies. Attending both the regional and national daylily Conventions are very enjoyable.
We also love working at church planting the gardens and pots. Serving on the Ambassadors as well as the Kitchen and Hospitality committees. I also serve on the operations committee. But our joy is serving with the Wellspring kids, both in VBS and Awana. Its our 8th year in Awana and to hear Grandpa B and Grandma B is music to our ears. These are our church grandkids and we thank the Lord for this Opportunity.
We have grown much deeper in our faith over the last 8 years we have worshipped at Wellspring. Weare so grateful for the truth spoken each Sunday from Gods word. We are blessed by incredible pastors!
TRAVIS COOK (RENEWING)
Married to Leslie Cook
Children: Judah (3.5 years), Carsten (4 months)
I'm an accountant by trade and work as a Finance Manager for a high net worth family in Grand Rapids. We have been members at Wellspring for nearly 6 years. I received the gift of salvation at a young age and it's been a journey of refinement ever since. The Lord reminds me daily of my need for His boundless grace and continually supplies it in the form of His perfect Word and amazing brothers/sisters in Christ. I count it a privilege to serve God and our church through roles as an usher, finance committee member, donation count team lead, and youth group leader alongside Leslie (BaseFiveSix!). It has been such an encouragement to watch Wellspring flourish as a church that makes Christ known through the faithful and unapologetic preaching of Scripture. Coupled with the growing resources afforded to both inward discipleship of the Wellspring body and outward commitment to missions, the Lord has blessed our church beyond measure!
JEREMY KWANT (RENEWING)
Married to Megan Kwant
Children: Jay (5 years), Rocky (3 years), Louie (1 year)
My wife Megan and I have been married for 4 years. We have 3 boys, Jay 5, Rocky 4 and Louie 1. We enjoy camping, being outside, and spending time as a family. I work at Plummers Environmental Services as a operation supervisor. I have been a member at Wellspring since 2015 but have been attending Wellspring since 2011. I currently serve on the Safety team, Nehemiah team, and active in men’s ministry. It's been awesome to watch over the past few years how God's faithfulness to Wellspring has grown the church body. I have seen the leadership grow and lead our community. Our family has personally experienced the love of a church rooted in the gospel.
BRIAN LITTLE (RENEWING)
Married to Abigail Little
Children: Jaybin (11 years), Dakota (8 years), Asher (7 years), and one on the way, due in November.
We homeschool and love getting outdoors and camping as a family. Since college, I have worked in the IT industry up until the fall of last year when God opened the door for a role at Stryker (medical devices & equipment) which was a big change but ultimately a blessing for our family. We have been members at Wellspring since 2014. Together we've served as small group leaders, marriage mentors, and served on various committees and events over the years. In my current role as a deacon I serve on the connections team as the lead for our ushers. It's been amazing to watch God's faithfulness to Wellspring over the past 10 years and the growth and maturity of the church body. We've seen leadership rise up and experienced the love and community of a church grounded in the gospel.
BRAD NEWMAN (RENEWING)
Married to Donna Newman
Children: Jessi, Rebekah and Matthew
Donna and I began attending Wellspring in March 2016 – we became members shortly after. Before that we attended churches of Reformed and Wesleyan trait. We thank our gracious and loving God for directing us to find Wellspring. At Wellspring, we see people growing in their faith and serving the Lord from the heart, pastors who faithfully bring God’s word with clarity and boldness, and many efforts taking place that God is using to raise up the next generation of believers in Christ. I’m currently a deacon at Wellspring and I serve on the following teams: Ambassador Team; Care Team; Nehemiah Team; Praise Team.
Having been raised in an unchurched family, I first heard the gospel and received Christ as my Savior in my early 20’s. Although my walk with Jesus Christ has seen up-hill battles, He has faithfully and victoriously kept me for His own glory through the years. I love the Lord – He is my Creator God, Savior, and Friend.
JACOB SAVOLA (RENEWING)
Married to Becky Savola
Children: Micah, Anna, & Isaac
When I was a teen I reaffirmed my commitment to Christ as I understood better what it meant to be a Christ follower. I have learned so much more since then just how important it is to follow Christ.
We started attending almost 10 years ago and have seen God take His people and give them a firm direction and a desire to seek His will. My personal growth of God’s Word through the expository study in which our pastors preach has greatly accelerated.
KEVIN TERBEEK (RENEWING)
Married to Molly TerBeek
Children: Reagan (10 years), Madison (8 years), Emma (6 years), Elijah (6 years)
I work locally as a realtor. I have volunteered in different areas at Wellspring from VBS, safety team, worship team, and Life Group Leaders. I have seen God work in a lot of different ways. With working on the worship team over the last year I have seen so many awesome things happening, from people tirelessly giving of their time and talents to play/sing/lead worship on Sunday mornings and Wednesday nights. I have also seen the ways God has brought people from the church into our lives and helped grow our relationship with God and them. I look forward to serving even more by becoming a deacon and seeing God work more in the church and the lives of others.
MARK WETTERS (RENEWING)
Married to Shauna Wetters
Children: Joshua and Jordann (daughter-in-law), Sierra, Luke and Kenna (daughter-in-law), Ryan, Kosie
I work for Gordon Food Service as a Data Analyst. I have been attending Wellspring since 2000. I came to faith as a child and saw Jesus through my parents and church community. I started teaching Sunday school at the age of 16. When I was a counselor at Spring Hill Camps, God confirmed my calling to work with kids. I have worked in Awana since 2000 and have seen many kids choose to follow Jesus, others grow in their faith and some even be baptized. It is a joy to serve at Wellspring and share the gospel with so many kids.
JAY WYLLYS (RENEWING)
Married to Jennifer Wyllys
Children: Gabriela and Dominic
I work for Zager’s Pool and Spa. My family and I have attended Wellspring Church for many years, and through that time we have seen how God works in things both large and small. The Lord has changed my life ever since I gave my life to Christ, and I am eager to see how He will continue to lead us through this next season at Wellspring Church. It is an honor and a joy to be considered for this role to serve the body of Christ at Wellspring.
ELDER CANDIDATES
We thank the following men for their time of service as they rotate off of the Wellspring Elder Board:
Tony Bonacci, Michael Goff, Dave Koetje, and Tom TenBrink
AARON ALSGAARD
Married to Danae Alsgaard
Children: London (9 years), Ford (7 years), Oaklyn (4 years)
God’s plan for my life has been an ongoing pursuit of my heart. I wasn’t raised in the Church and was introduced to Christianity in high school, but I was stubborn and literally said, "Maybe after college I’ll try out this Christian life." As the empty years passed and at His divine time, when I didn’t have another place to turn, He led me to Calvary Church for a year of chiseling, growth and repentance. It was during that time that I felt called to follow the path to Wellspring, where I’ve called home since 2008. Over the years, God has used people, circumstances, and seasons of brokenness to show me that if I could let go, He had something far better than I ever could’ve imagined. He has redeemed me by humbling me over and over again. Looking back, I see how God patiently pursued me, how He orchestrated every detail, and how He used each moment to draw me closer to Him. I'm grateful for His relentless love and grace.
Without a doubt, I’ve watched God’s hand guide our church to where we’re today. Very simply, this church wouldn’t still be Wellspring Community Church without God at the helm. He assembled this body of believers and prepared us for the previous turbulent seasons of the past, by banding together broken people who love Jesus. By depending on Him, we have been blessed with our current staff and have never been healthier as a body.
JOHN GILLETTE
Married to Sara Gillette
Children: Cameron, Analise, Elaina, Isaiah
My family has considered Wellspring our home church since 2001, when we moved to West Michigan. God's hand of protection and faithfulness has been evident throughout the life of our church, and we have been blessed to raise our family, find friends, and serve our community here at Wellspring. Growing up as a pastor's kid, I surrendered my life to God during high school. My spiritual journey has been marked by God's strength and my weaknesses. I am incredibly thankful for His faithfulness, grace, unconditional love, and continual pursuit of me. I love Jesus and desire to grow in my faith, striving to honor Him with my thoughts, words, and actions.
In the past, I have served as an elder at Wellspring and consider it a privilege to be considered for this opportunity to serve in that role once again. I have worked in the field of education for over 30 years as a teacher, counselor, coach, and administrator. I am currently the principal of an elementary school in the Hudsonville Public School system. Here at Wellspring, I serve as an usher, an ambassador, on our Missions team, as a Neighbors International partner, and on the REACH board and staff advisory team. I am excited to see where God will lead us as a church body in our collective mission of making disciples of Jesus Christ!
MATT MARSMAN
Married to Sandy Marsman
Children: Jenna, Brycen, Markie (16 years), Jax (10 years)
My wife and I both grew up in Allendale where we still currently live. We were both blessed to grow up in families that love the Lord and pointed us toward Jesus. I accepted Jesus in the 7th grade following a Wednesday night youth event. Through hills and valleys I have pursued Him since that evening in 7th grade. I have been blessed to have served as a Deacon and Elder previously at Wellspring and am humbled to be considered as a candidate again. I am a property manager in Grand Haven and Sandy is a 5th grade teacher at Allendale Public. We have been attending Wellspring since the fall of 2004.
JASON VANASSEN
Married to Brooke VanAssen
Children: Wyatt (15 years), Beckett (13 years), Portter (10 years), Sutton (8 years)
My wife, Brooke, and I have been attending Wellspring since 2004. I was saved at Wellspring in early 2005 and God has been refining us since. We were married here a short time after and have loved the relationships we have built here. We have also gotten to serve in many capacities, such as small group leaders and big event planning, and look forward to serving in this new role. We truly love Wellspring and look forward to the incredible things God is doing and going to do through His church.
MIKE VREDEVOOGD
Married to Holly Vredevoogd
Children: Joey, Analiese
Our family has been attending Wellspring since 2020 and we very much appreciate the commitment to solid biblical preaching and the genuine, gospel focused leadership at the church.
I was raised in a Christian home and committed my life to Christ at an early age after becoming aware of the importance of making a personal decision to trust Christ.
I am retired from the heating and cooling industry and enjoy various pursuits and in spending time with Holly and the kids.
I look forward to serving the Lord at Wellspring in the years ahead in whatever capacity He directs.
KEVIN VERBEEK (RENEWING)
Married to Kristin VerBeek
Children: Olivia (17 years), Owen (14 years), Eva (13 years)
We began attending Wellspring in August of 2017 and became members later that year. I have served alongside my wife as a Lifegroup Leader as well as volunteering in the tech booth on Sunday mornings running slides. My wife and I have also been involved in VBS each summer as team leaders. I love my church family and have found Wellspring to be a place where God is certainly at work through the Holy Spirit as lives are being transformed. I appreciate how God’s word is faithfully preached and lived out by the leadership of the church. I have loved the opportunities my kids have had to grow in their faith through Youth Group, Sunday school classes, and other church activities at Wellspring. I always look forward to worshipping my Lord and Savior with my Wellspring family each Sunday and can’t wait to see how God continues to work and move in our midst in the future.
